Is it against copyright to quote from a book to your blog/website?

blog definition

Hello,
I want to know if it is okay to quote a blockquote from a book to post in your blog/website? Reason I ask this is because I find some interesting stuff in a book and want to quote it into my blog/website. I want to make sure it isn’t against the copyright.

I include the author’s name and the book I get the quote in the footnote though. I dunno if it is still against copyright or not.

Another one that is similar to this question is I want to quote a story from a book and use it to make a study guide that will be shown on my website, is that okay? For exmaple: I want to quote a story, and then write down a list of definitions for the vocabulary words from that story. That way it helps me study as well as others.

My biggest concern is if it is against copyright or what.
Please help, thanks in advance.
Yes. I will be credit the references. Reason I have doubt is because I remember reading from a general Open Letter from the author in a book. They always state thanks to X author for giving the permissions to allow them to quote it. So I was wondering if I have to contact the author to quote it or not.

Thanks for the information!
There are some parts where it is only 1 or 2 sentences. But there are also part where I like a lot which is like.. well, it is like a paragraph. Is that still fine?

Thanks.

What is love? Is it as this blog entry describes? ?

blog definition

I was looking through the net and i discovered this blog entry that was written by an anonymous male… Do you agree with his perception?
Ladies out there… How would it make you feel reading such a blog entry?
What does it tell you about the person that typed it?

“What is Love?”

“Love” - It is a word that has many definitions, sometimes it is over used and used without meaning; other times it is not used enough to express to that special someone how you really feel.

Sometimes, no matter how hard you may try, no matter how much you do for a person, no matter how sweet, caring, loving, loyal you are towards them -
You may try to succeed but sadly to no avail.

Some other people never try to express how they feel, some people that are untrue, indecisive and false get exactly what they would like in life, these inconsiderate people will hurt others without care, only caring for themselves; believing that THEY must come first.

I consider myself to be a genuine person, someone that does really care and someone that does try their best at all times, i am true and i am loyal. I have always believed and i still believe “honesty is the best policy”.

I have made some good friends on here, very good friends. I have also made good friends here and sadly lost some too, party as a result of my own stupidity and other combining factors.

All i hope is that love does still exist, i hope it is a magical feeling, i hope it is true, i hope it is everlasting.
I am not a difficult person to please, i am easy to please. In the past i have tried my best to express my feelings, have always tried to be honest, true and caring.
I wish to experience how it feels to be “in love”, i wish to also determine whether true love does still exist… “

Has anyone encountered this sort of foolery ?

blog definition

My job was to issue punched tapes containing a sonar program. At the beginning of the tape was a “visual header” in alphanumeric.
Therefore there was no possibility of issuing a mislabelled tape. (The visual header, and program tape were created together, without any human intervention).
Nevertheless, someone called a meeting with high level naval people, to discuss why a mislabelled tape was issued.
I simply hoped that the person who called the meeting might be sacked (as they might be if it was their job to double check the tape).
After ten years it dawned on me that organisation reputation was involved, that I perhaps should have issued some sort of denial.
I suspect there was an aspect of “limited hangout” (see Richard Tomlinson blog for definitions).
I suspect there was some defect in the systems that was being covered up - admission to some shortcomings in sonar tape quality would have been “stapled” to a denial that there were other defects in other systems.
